I'm thinking about sailing my Lancer 30 mkv to Hawaii and beyond. Wondering if anyone has done a similar crossing on this type of boat. I've never been in any heavy weather on this boat and would love to hear some sea stories. I've seen a few lancer 30's in HI and would love to hear the tales. But if anyone has two cents I'll put it in my pocket!

Hey MAD Max. Haven't done much off shore in my 27PS. Furthest I've been out was about 10 miles and the boat handled well. I'll be heading up from Point Loma to Oceansidet on the 15th on November. Probably head out a good 15~20 miles to avoid tacking all the way up the coast.

I think the 30 should handle it. I'd try a few off shore overnighters and see how you feel.

Good luck.

Cool Brian,
Thanks for the reply! I've been in the so-cal blue water a few times (Catalina, Channel islands, Cortez banks, etc) and have never seen more than 22kts of breeze in maybe 5ft seas. Guess I'll have to wait for a good storm to come through (how often that happens) to get a good feel for the boat.
Fair winds!
Max.

Max,

That is a trip of about 2650 miles. Assuming 6 mph running 24/7 it would take you about 18 days. It is tough to get a window of good weather 18 days long. It is certainly doable in many different boats given VERY careful planning, good maintenance and good weather.

I had a friend rescued off a 45 footer (the Almeisan) halfway between Bermuda and the coast...the range of a Coastguard helicopter wasn't sufficient to get to them when they were turtled by a 40 foot rogue wave in 20 foot seas 400 miles off the main land. The Captain, a vetran sailor who did the trip 25 times, died. http://ms.soundingspub.com/Soundings/Gulf_Stream1.asp
