Hi
It is great to see others that love their boats too.
I keep mine at Port Hardy and although i have not sailed it in years, near and dear friends have. My boat has a huge place in my heart and in my mind. On it we made many great memories. I would rather sail than do just about anything.
Why no sailing? My wife had a stroke a long time ago so she cannot sail any more. We still talk fondly of our times on "the boat" resorting to memories of a happier time for us both. I have talked recently of going and getting it (after a little sail on Desolation Sound that is).
I think this place will give me the motivation to do just that!!

Hi, Glad to hear you have enjoyed your Sirius over the years. Yes these are great boats, very sea worthy and a pleasure to sail. Sorry to hear family health has prevented you from sailing your boat. I can see that your fond memories indicate your great love of sail. My only regret is that I did not get into sail at a younger age, I only fell in love with sail after retirement, but have always loved the water.
I note that you have your boat at Port Hardy and I'm wondering if you have run into a fellow Sirius owner who sails her Sirius21 out of Nanaimo. Her name is Helen and her boats name is "Wind Lady". We have talked for years since we boat our Sirius, but this last year I have not heard much from her. I will not post her last name on an open form for security reasons. Would be interesting if you knew her, we have never met but a very interesting person for sure. She sails solo much of the time on the "salt chuck", very adventurous gal.
It still will be some time before we get our boat home from storage, still cold with much snow on the ground, can't wait...much to do before launch time.
All the best....bob

Hey guys,
My father and I just purchased a Sirius 21. It was in really bad shape at first but we are slowly getting it back in shape. We are not avid sailors by any means but enjoy working on it together and are certainly looking forward to getting it on the water. Being new to the sailing community, I am looking for a rudder to put on this new (to us) vessel. Do any of you have any suggestions on where to look or even how to make a rudder for this particular model of sailboat?
You have bought a great boat well worth your effort to restore!!! Your rudder question...first do you have the upper rudder casing, the portion that fits into the rudder pintles? I hope so and you are just missing the kick up portion (the actual rudder). If you are missing the whole rudder system let me know. But if you are just missing just the foil section, the lower kick up section then there is a source for a new one. Not sure where you reside but "Phil's Foils" in Ottawa Ontario builds them. They are a bit pricey. Again if missing the whole unit let me know, and we can talk via a proper email address...Bob

Ahoy lads. my father and I also had a great time restoring boats he was into fishing/motorboats where I was sail....nevertheless my sirius 21 rudder was also in bad shape, the previous owner leaving it in the water all year round. It was delaminating and the varnish had peeled off......I left it out in the sun to dry for a few days, then belt sanded a nice smooth contour. then wrapped it in fibreglass. Sand it smooth give one
more coat of resin and then 2 coats of "INTERLUX bottomcoatXXX. It seems to be holding out fine... but I ship it every time we return to dock.If yours is really shot you could trace out the profile onto a spruce or P.T. 2X10 then fibreglass and paint it. If you have lost everything hopefully you still have the aluminum plates which attach tiller to upper rudder I can send you a PDF paper template which you could cut out and fit...I agree with previuos poster about the expense of Phils foils(although they are excellent)it would probably be 400 bucks at least....I think the average sailor could get by with a homemade wood/fibreglass solution for about 60 bucks.
Happy sailing,

A follow up on rudder blades. I noted from our other forums etc that many do epoxy/glass their rudder, a great idea. A few of our friends have had their rudder break off right at the swing bolt hole. Please inspect the bolt hole for any signs of dry rot. In many cases the exterior looks fine but in fact the inside has degraded and rotted. Do a good check in the hole, if there is any sign of being spongy or has pitting in the hole then there could be problems. After a friend had his rudder break off I inspected mine and even though it looked fairly good I mixed up some West System Epoxy and dilluted it down with alcohol. I taped off one side of hole and poured in the epoxy. This stuff when thinned will soak into the wood really well. I kept adding till it would not take more then I removed the puddle still left. This seals the hole where the rot can start.
The loss of your rudder can be a heart stopping thing.... so inspect yours....Bob

I do not have the rudder casing or the portion that fits into the rudder pintles. I am missing the entire unit. I reside in middle Tennessee. It may be worth mentioning that I am not looking to spend a great deal on this rudder just yet. Maybe fashioning something out of a hardwood and sealing really well. Let me know your thoughts.

Hi, sorry to hear you have none of the rudder parts. I recall that there is a fellow Sirius owner down your way, but can't remember his name. Sadly he lost his boat to a fire. If you do know of him he may have some parts that he salvaged from the remains. See if you can find him, maybe someone viewing this entry has more info, but if that's a dead end then maybe I can provide a drawing of the whole rudder so you can make one. If you can provide an email address we can talk and get more info. I am in the process of building a new rudder design based on the CS22, a vertical pull up design. I provided info on our other web site but fell on deaf ears so I removed the info.... if I can be of help get back to me.....Bob
That would be great if you could provide me with the drawing of the whole rudder. My email is andrewdavis662@msn.com
Thanks Bob for your help.

That would be Sweetdreams and belonged to gregmardis@yahoo.com. I'm sorry to say that the rudder was inside her and burned away to nothing. I have since bought a Catalina 22 that I was going to restore but it has turned into a nightmare and plan to either part her out or plant kudzu around her and forget her. I have the rudder for that boat. I don't know if it would work or not but I bet you could use it. It is fiberglass, not wood and spent a lot of time in the brackish James River but other than barnacles and a small ding in the bottem leading edge I can see nothing wrong with it. If you are interested contact me. I am in Dayton, TN.
