Pictures of spreader brackets/mount

Hello Cal Owners,

I've a got a pretty loose spreader and wanted to see if I could find and overhead picture or diagram so that I can see what I'm in for before going up the mast. By wiggling the shroud, I can tell that the bracket that is attached to the mast is tight, but the spreader has a lot of right/left action on top of the bracket when I move the shroud. Looking up at it from the deck, I can see that two cotter pins are still in place, but I'm not sure if there is a third missing that I can't see. Any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure if you can tell from the pictures, but the spreaders on my 1979 CAL 2-25 are held on with two pins (bosses on top and cotter pins on bottom) though the sockets that are attached to the mast with what look to be four 1/4" machine screws. The lower fore and aft stays are attached to the tang.

Thanks for your pics and reply. I can see that the two cotter pins on my loose spreader are still in place. In your opinion, do you think the replacement of the pins would fix the loose left and right action with the spreader or it's a problem with my rigging?

Brian,

You need to verify if it's the pins or the wooden spreader that has been wollowed or rotted out. My first guess is that your in for replacing the spreaders. Especially if there has been loosness for some time, that will really open up the holes in the wood. A trip up the mast is required to know for sure.

I haven't climbed my mast but I always thought the CAL 2-25 spreaders were aluminum just like the CAL 2-27. Actually the whole rig is very heavy duty and looks to be the same as is used on the CAL 2-27. I think the original CAL 25 may have used spruce spreaders. Can anyone confirm this?
