Don,The P.O. of my c-270 removed the boom vang and configured it for use as a preventer. the 270 has a mid boom traveler. several of the members in my club say that a boom vang would be of little advantage with the mid boom traveler.. what are your thoughts, should i keep it as a preventer, or back to the boom vang?thanksnate jackson

We have a snap-shackle where our rope vang attaches to a bail at the bottom of the mast. When we sail on a long, cruising run, we move the snap shackle to the toerail forward as a preventer. By the way, a preventer also acts with the mainsheet as a vang, holding the boom down while running.DavidLady Lillie '77 h27

Nate: I'd put it back as a boom vang. What happens when the boom goes over the side of the boat and the mainsheet becomes ineffective. Does the boom tend to rise up? Try it as a boom vang and see for yourself the results you get. If it is of no value, go back to using it as a preventer
