Loss of power - smoke

Last week I was motoring in from a routine sailing weekend, and suddenly I lost about half my power and black smoke was coming from the exaust. I refueled at the gas dock (I had a half full tank at the time). When I started the engine the problem went away. I don't think the two are related. Any thoughts on what happened?
