I love everything about my Catalina 36 except it's limited fuel capacity -20 gal. On longer trips I carry many jerry cans but would like to add more permanent capacity. Has anyone done this and if so where was the additonal tank installed?

Just out interest how many hours do you get from 20 gal?

I had a 1985 C36 with the M25 21hp Universal and it burned about 1 quart an hour at cruising speed. The one question I always had was..how much of the capacity of the tank is really useable? MPJ

I have a catalina 42 mk II anc have increased it to 58 gallons and plan to add 45 more to get 100 Why... Fuel makes wind, water, electricity and gets you out of bad situations by giving you an alternative to wind hence no pressure to sail. I am a Pilot and as such have learned that 70% of avation problems stem from low fuel. This in turn causes the pilot to make pressure decisions which lead to slow walking and sad singing situations. The rule in aircraft is to carry 100 more fuel than you are likely to need. Extra fuel gives extra margin of error in crusing and extra safety. I sail in California and down to mexico hence I want to have a fuel cap. that will take me 400-500 miles under power (see the Baha Bash) My yanmar 50 uses fuel with a 3 blade 18" prop at the following rates in flat water. 2100 rpm .6gph 5.1 Kts 2400 rpm 1.0gph 5.8 kts 2800 rpm 1.2 gph 6.2 kts I use PRI fuel additive which increases fuel economy about 5 to 7% based on sea trials As far as how far you can go I figure I can make 75% of the net speed as SOG this allows for swells and counter currents Dan Smith REUNION #533 SAN DIEGO

Dan, I saw your note about increased fuel capacity on your C42. I have C42, MkII, 3-cabin, Hull Number 573. I would be very interested to know how you increased your fuel capacity. I took my boat from New York to Bermuda, and back, this summer and I had to carry 6x6 gallon West Marine yellow diesel containers lased to my stanchions. And, of course, transferring it in a seaway is not easy, given the location of the fuel fill. (I rigged up a manual pump and hoses). I would really appreciate it if you could let me know what modifications you did to your C42 to increase your fuel capacity. An e-mail to Mikey4@idt.net would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Michael Yorke C42, Mk II, Hull #573, Certa Cito Port Washingon, Long Island, New York
