What would be the speed diffrence in a Hunter 170 equipped with a spinnaker sail verses one that did not have a spinnaker, if all factors were the same wind,current,etc. ?
I've never sailed with a spinnaker. From what I've read and seen though, the extra sail area a spinnaker provides allows a boat to go faster downwind than under main and jib. How much faster? I'll leave that question for someone with spinnaker experience. You should know that sailing well with a spinnaker takes some skill. If you don't know what you're doing you could end up with the thing in the water and wrapped around your centerboard or rudder. If you've never used one before I'd recommend going out with someone who has before trying it yourself.
