I am the new owner of a 1967 Morgan 24. I was wondering, does anyone know if the 24's were orginally equipped with a boom vang? Can anyone recommend some good sites to read over that might help me with how the 24 was originally rigged up? Or for that matter, info about the 24 in general :) I'd appreciate any help. ~Sean

The boat was originally equipped with roller reefing where the boom had a fitting for a handle that when cranked rolled the sail around the boom. This was popular 40-50 years ago. The shape wasn't very good and roller reefing around the boom isn't seen much anymore. The arrangement also prevented the installation of a fixed vang. A vang/preventer was rigged with a device that slipped over the boom from the end and snubbed to a eye on the deck or rail. I have copies of original M24 brochures from '65 to '68 if would like them. I used to own a 1969 M25 which was a variant of the original 1965 to 1968 M24. I rigged a vang for mine and did away with the original reefing arrangement for the more efficient jiffy reefing. Sean, I have installed a boom vang on my 68 Morgan 24 because the preventer that came with the boat did not look to be very easy to use and would not work well while sailing up wind. Since I have installed a mast hinge to allow lowering the mast for trailering, I used the hinge pin to connect the lower portion of the vang to and then installed a bail on the boom for the other. The simple 4 to 1 vang works well. Dave, I would be interested in getting a copy of the brochure for the 66 & 68 Morgan 24. I also have a 66 Morgan 24 that I am trying to get sailing. Mr. Doolin, I recently became the proud owner of a '63 Morgan 24 and would REALLY like a copy of your brochure! I haven't hauled the boat yet, and so haven't seen the swing keel. The previous owner pinned the keel in place as the workings for lifting were beyond repair. Do you know how the lifting arrangement worked? Thanks, Merlin Clark.
