I am looking at getting into my first catalina - a 27. After reading the forum on using a surveyor I would like to hire one. Where do I go to find one? Is there a certification I should look for in a surveyor? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

If you're taking out a loan to buy the boat, your lender will have a list of approved surveyors. If you're paying cash, you can still call your financial institution & ask for the list. I'm sure you can also contact NAMS (Nat'l Assn of Marine Surveyors) at www.namsurveyors.org or SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) at marinesurvey.org. Both websites of member directories. Good luck & have fun! LaDonna

Find a Catalina dealer in your area and ask for a list of surveyors in the area. Also, marinas and other boat dealers will have listings. In my state, marine surveyors are not required to be state licensed. However, there are schools and associations which certify marine surveyors. You could ask for such credentials. The experience of the person counts for more than anything in my mind.

Boat / US provided me with a list of surveyors in the area where a boat I was looking at was located. I can recommend a surveyor in the North Carolina area if you need one in this area. westabrooks@unctv.org

Jarrad, don't know where you're located. But if it's in Northern Ohio, call Kevin Bache in Sandusky. He's a sailor as well as a power-boater -- owns a power boat, crews on a sailboat. He has surveyed several boats for us and is honest and thorough. Good luck and happy sailing! Chris Bloor & Bob Sheppard Great Escape III C-42 #372

Jarrad, when I bought my Catalina 27 last year I used a surveyor working out of Ct. by the name of Jim Dias. He was really great and very thorough. He can be reached @ Marine Surveyors 1 800 426 2825. By coincidence he was in Block Island in a slip next to my brother and noticed a defect in my brothers boat that could have been potentially dangerous.
