View Full Version : Changing engine coolant on a Bavaria 36

It's time to change the coolant in the Volvo D2030 on my Bavaria 36. There is precious little room between the drain plug on the starboard side of the engine block and the bulkhead, and I am not sure how to catch the old coolant without just letting it drain into the bilge. Any ideas suggestions?
the drain plug and attach a length of hose to the funnel you may be able to control the direction of the flow. Perhaps a wet-dry vacuum would be useful with this combo. I expect that you will also need to control the rate of flow. I have no idea if that will work but it is one idea. :)

Most likely, all the 36 owners will need to do it in the next year or so, if not right away. I'd like to get a story (hopefully with pictures) from whoever does one first - I post them on our website.

as an old auto mechanic from many years back, I ask: do you have use the drain plug? I'm NOT familiar with your boat, so I may be speaking out of the wrong orifice, but you might find it better to crack a hose loose and catch the effluent from there with a modified funnel, cut out to go around the hose, a bucket, or a shop vac as mentioned. You may even find that the shop vac hose is the right size to go on the fitting. Other options are to slip a smaller diameter hose into the system and suck up the coolant, use a 1/4 or 3/8 pipe and syphon to a clearer working area, or some combination of these. Good luck, and don't make a mess, lol!!
