I'm getting mixed advice on when to use the barber hauler. My dealer says both in light and heavy air going close hauled. A sailmaker who sailed with me said that I only need it on a reach. What do you think?

The barber-hauler is set up in place of moveable jib leads.... meaning, you use it to trim the jib regardless of point of sail. Set the main jib block as far aft as you need for high wind beating, then use the barber-hauler to pull the jib sheet forward to adjust for lighter air and/or point of sail. Michael O'

You need to move the lead forward in choppy seas to provide more power. In flat seas, move the lead back to flatten the sail. You can also use it to adjust the telltale break so it is symmetrical, but it's better to use it for sea state adjustments in conjunction with the sheet. MC
