Tiller Gasket

While working on my 1977 Catalina 30, I noticed a gasket-type "thing" at the base of the tiller which looks like several rubber bands stacked on top of each other.Several of the bands have disintegrated. What is this called, where do I get a new one, and what does it cost? Also are there any problems with replacing it besides the numerous bolts to be loosened, etc.?

Could you be describing some sheaves to tighten up a loose tiller? Without seeing it, that's my best guess. Go talk with someone at West Marine & see what they suggest for replacement. Just be sure not to drop your tiller when you remove all those bolts!LaDonna
